Nordic: Finland and Scandinavia
As the Nordic countries – Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden – are some of the most competitive economies in the world, enterprises from these countries are quite active in the U.S. market. Whether Nordic or U.S.-based, you can draw on Holland & Knight’s long experience in representing Nordic clients to support your regional and international business objectives.
Combined Practices
In 1997, Holland & Knight combined practices with Haight, Gardner, Poor & Havens, a U.S. firm which has represented Scandinavian clients for over a century; and in 2001, with Gilbert, Segall and Young, a U.S. firm with a long history of representing Finnish clients. This combination provides perhaps the strongest base of experience in the U.S. in representing clients from the Nordic countries.
Cultural Insight
Cultural and business differences between each of the Nordic countries and the U.S. can present unique challenges for enterprises engaging in cross-border dealings. Our attorneys are adept in helping Nordic clients pursue their business goals in the U.S. Our experience in serving Nordic clients is enhanced by the presence of attorneys trained in Scandinavia as well as the U.S. who speak the language and understand the culture. Each year young lawyers from the Nordic countries participate in Holland & Knight's training program for foreign lawyers.
Targeted Services
Historically, Haight Gardner represented ship owners, underwriters and financial institutions involved in lending to the transportation industry. Since the 1997 merger, Holland & Knight has been able to offer a broad spectrum of practice capabilities in over 100 areas of law including M&A, corporate, IPOs and other public listings, tax, real estate, litigation, product liability defense and other litigation, immigration, intellectual property matters, insurance coverage, energy, biotech, government contracting and many other areas of the law relevant to Nordic interests in respect of their activities and investments in the U.S.
Community Involvement
Guidance for your Nordic-related business in the U.S. is provided by a team of over 40 lawyers dedicated to supporting the Nordic business community. Many are leaders of the Danish-American, Finnish-American, Norwegian-American and Swedish-American Chambers of Commerce located the U.S. as well as other business and cultural organizations serving the Nordic interests.
