Environment: Alert - August 22, 2008

On August 6, 2008, a Riverside County Superior Court held that the Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for a controversial luxury resort was inadequate for failing to analyze the project’s greenhouse gas emissions. The lawsuit is one of a series of court challenges brought by the Center for Biological Diversity and the Sierra Club to require analysis of GHG emissions from new development through CEQA. With this holding, the court provided the latest indication that global warming must be addressed in EIRs.

Press Releases

Deana M. Perlmutter Joins Holland & Knight's Washington, D.C. Office

June 3, 2008

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Holland & Knight announced that Deana M. Perlmutter has joined the Government Section of the firm's Washington, D.C. office as Senior Policy Advisor in the Public Policy & Regulation Group. Previously, she was senior vice president of Dutko Worldwide in Denver.

Perlmutter focuses her efforts on Sustainability matters, with a particular emphasis on clean technologies and venture capital, to effect public policies that advance market opportunities. Working closely with senior government officials, Perlmutter has been a strong advocate for the deployment of technologies that encourage energy efficiency, improve air quality and address climate change.

"We are excited to have Deana join with us and help lead our Green Technology and Public Policy work as Washington and the world move to cleaner, greener and more cost effective energy," said Gerry Sikorski, chair of Holland & Knight's Government Section and former Congressman (D-MN) who served for a decade on the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee. Sikorski is the author of Acid Rain and Community Right to Know laws.

Perlmutter co-founded the GridWise Alliance which is advocating change locally, regionally, and nationally to promote policies and technology solutions for a smarter grid that integrates the infrastructure, processes, devices, information and market structure so that energy can be generated, distributed, and consumed more efficiently and cost effectively.

"Deana's work connecting cutting-edge renewable technology companies to policy makers in Washington is a critical building block for our policy practice moving forward in a carbon-constrained era," said Rich Gold, head of the firm's Public Policy & Regulation practice.

Additionally, Perlmutter is responsible for organizing the CEO Coalition to Advance Sustainable Technology (CEO Coalition), an organization whose members include the CEOs of leading high technology, utility, industrial and environmental companies from across the country dedicated to demonstrating that environmental stewardship is good business. As part of that work, Perlmutter spearheaded the proposal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by establishing credits for companies that take early action before they are mandated to act. This included both a national proposal and extensive work with the California Resources Agency on climate change, air quality, energy efficiency and a voluntary greenhouse gas emissions registry.

Perlmutter is also a founder of the New Resource Bank, the first US Bank dedicated to serving entrepreneurs and sustainable businesses.
