Middle East: Alert - March 18, 2010

The government of Bahrain recently announced changes to the country's rules relating to work visas for expatriate workers. Specifically, foreign workers in Bahrain are now able to change jobs without the consent of their employers. This new rule, the first of its kind in the Middle East, will help to bring an end to the current phenomena of Bahraini citizens sponsoring multiple foreign workers and charging a "visa fee" to work for another employer.

Product Liability: Alert - March 19, 2010

A bill recently introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives would require foreign manufacturers of certain products imported into the United States to establish registered agents in this country who are authorized to accept service of process against such manufacturers. As is noted in this alert, of particular importance is the provision of the proposed Foreign Manufacturers Legal Accountability Act of 2010 that establishes that by registering an agent, the foreign manufacturer would consent to personal jurisdiction of the state and federal courts in the state where the agent is located.

"Vessel Leasing," a chapter published in the treatise Equipment Leasing-Leveraged Leasing, discusses the financing through leasing structures of commercial vessels recorded under the laws of the United States. Rather than focusing on common issues to general personal property leasing, Chapter 20 highlights issues that are unique to commercial vessel lease financings. These distinctive findings are due to the nature of the vessel or the statutory and other legal frameworks correlating to admiralty and maritime law.
