The Supreme Court Decision in Citizens United v. FEC

This alert reviews key aspects of last week's landmark Supreme Court decision in Citizens United v. FEC, in which the Court cleared the way for corporations and labor unions to contribute to political campaigns in a more direct way - and permitted those entities to pay for express advocacy as long as the advocacy is not coordinated with any campaign or political party. It also points to underreported aspects of the ruling, and areas of campaign finance rules that will remain the same.

Product Liability: Alert - March 19, 2010

A bill recently introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives would require foreign manufacturers of certain products imported into the United States to establish registered agents in this country who are authorized to accept service of process against such manufacturers. As is noted in this alert, of particular importance is the provision of the proposed Foreign Manufacturers Legal Accountability Act of 2010 that establishes that by registering an agent, the foreign manufacturer would consent to personal jurisdiction of the state and federal courts in the state where the agent is located.

Thomas Morante Joins Holland & Knight's Miami Office as a Partner in the Financial Services Group

MIAMI – Holland & Knight is pleased to announce that Thomas Morante has joined the firm's Miami office as a partner in the Financial Services Practice Group and Team Leader of the firm's Insurance Industry Team.

Morante focuses on insurance, banking and finance, and securities matters in the U.S. and internationally. He advises financial services clients on authorization, licensing, product development, sales and marketing practices, and regulatory compliance with respect to life insurance, variable products, hedge funds, health insurance, and title insurance. He also counsels clients relative to formation of captive insurers, reinsurance transactions, bancassurance, and compliance issues regarding offshore insurance transactions.

"He adds considerable depth to our practice, particularly in the insurance space, at a critical time in the financial services industry when convergence in the U.S. and global regulatory framework applicable to financial services providers is likely."

Prior to joining Holland & Knight, Morante was the head of Jones Walker's Miami and Washington, D.C. offices, and co-chaired its International Practice. He received his B.A., magna cum laude, from Union College, New York, his J.D. from the American University Washington College of Law, and his LL.M. in International and Comparative Law from Georgetown University Law Center.
