San Diego County Officials Walk Back Comments on Casinos Reopening
Native American Law Partner James Meggesto spoke with ABC 10 News, San Diego about the re-opening of casinos in the area starting next week. The county's top health officer initially claimed the health order extended to tribal nations and vowed to work with the CDC to prevent local casinos from re-opening, however she walked back these comments a day later calling tribal nations sovereign entities. Mr. Meggesto confirmed that tribes have the law on their side in this case. "State and local governments have no jurisdiction over tribal lands and would not have any authority to stop any tribal gaming facility from reopening," said Mr. Meggesto, so when it comes to reopening, it's up to each individual tribe.
