The Burden Continues to Be on the Middle Class
Tax attorney Juan Carlos Valencia wrote a column for Diario La República about the tax burden carried by the middle class in Colombia. Mr. Valencia says that the middle class, whom he names as wage earners, are the ones who demonstrate greater tax compliance and less rate of tax evasion. This is why he insists that instead of charging more taxes to those who earn more than 10 million pesos a month, the current government should focus on getting more people to enter that segment. He believes the best way to achieve this goal is by promoting the creation of businesses and the generation of more jobs. Mr. Valencia says these mechanisms and objectives are totally absent in the tax reform of the current government.
