The Airline Industry Needs More Competition — The JetBlue/Spirit Merger Is Just What Travelers Need
International Trade attorney Francisco Sanchez published a column in The Hill expressing support for JetBlue's merger with Spirit Airlines. The Biden Administration is fighting the deal, arguing it will hurt travelers and raise prices. Mr. Sanchez, who previously served as an assistant secretary for the U.S. Department of Transportation and as the U.S. Under Secretary of Commerce for Trade, contends the opposite, saying the combined company would be a stronger competitor against the big four carriers in the airline industry. He notes that all three major unions support the merger, adding that JetBlue would be able to make investments in equipment, training and personnel — all of which would be beneficial for consumers.
