Litigation attorney Daniel Small authored a Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly article about Appling County, Georgia, where a determined resident took on the battle against deep-seated corruption within the local sheriff's department. Despite lacking formal law enforcement experience, he successfully ran for sheriff and worked with federal authorities to launch a Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO) investigation, which resulted in the indictment of 18 defendants and helped restore justice in the community. Mr. Small explained that the joy and relief felt by the area's dedicated officers were a powerful reminder of how trial lawyers can unexpectedly and significantly affect people's lives.
