FTC Shows Willingness to Use Extreme Measures to Tame AI

Corporate Counsel

Consumer Protection Defense and Compliance attorney Anthony DiResta was quoted in a Coporate Counsel article about the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) increased enforcement activity against artificial intelligence (AI)-driven companies that disregard consumer privacy. The article centers on punishments known as “algorithmic disgorgement,” which seeks to regulate companies' misuse of AI models to collect sensitive customer data. Mr. DiResta expanded on the objective of these regulations and commented on how the FTC expects this to serve as a deterrent for companies seeking to take advantage of this new technology.

“The FTC hopes companies violating consumer privacy to cheaply train their AI may think twice because the punishment is becoming more severe,” he said.
