Limited Modifications Expected in the USMCA

Reforma

International Trade attorney Francisco Sánchez was quoted in a Reforma article discussing the U.S.-Mexico trade relationship prospects and of the U.S. election outcomes. He mentioned that Donald Trump tends to use threats as a negotiation tactic without a real intention to exit the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), whereas Kamala Harris would likely implement changes in a more measured way, seeing Mexico as a vital ally. Mr. Sánchez also noted that foreign trade policy might not immediately take center stage in the electoral agenda, yet the significance of the bilateral relationship will be acknowledged by whoever wins.

"The difference between Trump and Harris will be more in their negotiation style. Mexico is a country she aims to keep as an ally in many areas, including immigration, trade, but also in promoting democracy," he said.
