The De Minimis Exemption 'Causing Chaos at All Levels'

International Trade attorney Andrew McAllister was quoted in an article published by The Wall Street Journal discussing President Donald Trump's executive order expanding the scope of tariffs to affect low-value imports. Mr. McAllister indicated that the order, requiring tariffs on packages under $800, is causing widespread disruption for retailers and logistic companies. The de minimis exemption, a long-standing facilitator of free trade, is also facing legislative scrutiny to prevent exploitation by certain countries.
"This is causing chaos at all levels," he said.
