EPA's New Chemicals Program Eyed as Effort Builds to Change Law
Bloomberg Law
Public Policy & Regulation attorney Dimitrios Karakitsos was quoted in a Bloomberg Law article about the future of regulations issued under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA). As lawmakers deliberate on potential amendments and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit examines key regulatory decisions, the direction of chemical safety oversight hangs in the balance. Mr. Karakitsos talked about the original congressional intent behind the TSCA amendments, which aimed to ensure the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) conducts timely and thorough safety reviews for new chemicals.
"New chemicals is the prime example of where Congress did not get what it intended," he said, pointing to gaps between legislative goals and current implementation that leave some manufacturers waiting well past the 90-day deadline for the government to review products.
