Trucking Braces for Immigration Crackdowns
Business immigration attorney Hadeel Abouhasira was interviewed by FreightWaves about the potential impacts of new executive orders on trucking operations. These directives and policies, in particular those concerning cross-border trucking and national security, could lead to longer processing times, increased scrutiny from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and complications when renewing work permits for truckers between the U.S., Mexico and Canada. Ms. Abouhasira advised drivers to always carry evidence of their legal status to avoid issues during audits, raids or traffic stops.
"Even though you're here legally or employing drivers legally, one thing we're recommending for clients is to conduct an I-9 audit for their employees — making sure they have all their I-9s in order and making sure they're updating those I-9s when they need to," she said.
