Beyond Labor Reform: What Happened to the Labor Statute in Colombia?

Labor and employment attorney Camilo Cuervo was quoted in an article published by El Espectador regarding the need for a labor statute in Colombia. Mr. Cuervo said he believes that since 1993, fundamental labor rights established by the Constitutional Court have had direct application, eliminating the need for a statute, substantive code or additional regulations to apply these principles in the labor sector. However, he acknowledged "there are many proposals in the air that have been constructed from different perspectives that can be leveraged" and suggested the current political environment should be used to build a statute with elements that are already known to work.
