Holland & Knight Secures Trust Funds for Children’s Cancer Association
PORTLAND, Ore. (March 24, 2015) – As the result of the pro bono efforts of Holland & Knight attorneys, Portland-based Children’s Cancer Association (CCA) will receive more than $600,000 to use in its fight against childhood cancer, the largest legacy in its history.
In July 2013, Holland & Knight filed a claim in San Francisco County Superior Court on behalf of CCA, which had been named a beneficiary of the trust of a San Francisco Bay Area resident who had recently died. The claim was disputed by the heirs because the bequest had been made in a handwritten trust amendment that was signed and dated by the decedent. After a two-year legal battle, the firm has prevailed and CCA will receive 40 percent of the proceeds, approximately $607,000, from the sale of an apartment building in San Francisco owned by the decedent.
CCA was represented by Holland & Knight partners Alan Jensen and Stacie Nelson, who are based in the firm’s Portland and San Francisco offices respectively, and associate Kyong Kim, also of the San Francisco office.
