Healthcare, Life Sciences and Technology Regulatory Lawyer John Vaughan Joins Holland & Knight in Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES (July 22, 2024) – Holland & Knight has strengthened its Public Policy & Regulation Group with the addition of John Vaughan as a partner in Los Angeles. Mr. Vaughan previously led the product and corporate counsel legal teams, and served as interim chief privacy officer at Verily, an Alphabet Inc. company.
At Verily, Mr. Vaughan was instrumental in scaling the legal department to support the company's transformation into a global health tech leader. He has overseen critical legal functions supporting artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) data science applications in healthcare, navigated complex regulatory environments and managed high-stakes enforcement and compliance matters. As interim chief privacy officer, he developed a robust data governance strategy to help ensure compliance with U.S. statutes, the European Union General Data Protection Regulation and other international health and data privacy laws.
Mr. Vaughan has established and managed comprehensive legal governance, privacy and compliance programs for multiple organizations, including overseeing corporate restructuring, drug/device approvals and global commercialization strategies. Notably, he played a pivotal role in representing companies defending matters brought by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), as well as navigating regulatory landscapes involving the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), European Medicines Agency (EMA), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and legislative bodies, influencing pivotal policies and regulations. He has also developed impactful legal, regulatory and legislative strategies for life sciences and technology companies.
