Overview
Jacob A. Barrera is a litigation attorney in Holland & Knight's San Francisco office and a member of the firm's Litigation and Dispute Resolution Practice Group and the national Healthcare & Life Sciences Industry Group. Mr. Barrera focuses his practice on general commercial litigation and healthcare litigation and has experience representing companies in a broad array of civil disputes, including arbitrations and mediations. Mr. Barrera also represents companies in government investigations brought by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), state attorneys general and regulators in a wide range of practice areas, including healthcare fraud and abuse.
Mr. Barrera has broad experience litigating in healthcare and complex business disputes. He has represented healthcare clients in False Claims Act (FCA) matters, healthcare fraud and abuse, and labor and employment matters, including whistleblower, harassment, discrimination and retaliation claims and investigations, among others. He also represents diverse clients in arbitration and commercial litigation, including in the e-commerce and hospitality industries.
Mr. Barrera also focuses on regulatory compliance matters and litigation that develops from them, particularly in the healthcare space.
Prior to joining Holland & Knight, Mr. Barrera interned for a California-based Medicare Advantage health insurance company and the DOJ's Office of Vaccine Litigation in Washington, D.C.
Prior to law school, Mr. Barrera worked in a variety of roles related to public health and healthcare policy for federally qualified health centers (FQHCs), academic research institutions and healthcare nonprofits, as well as LGBT healthcare, research and advocacy organizations. Mr. Barrera has extensive knowledge of the U.S. healthcare system.
In the community, Mr. Barrera focuses his efforts on mentoring first-generation and Latino/a/x/e students, as well as issues related to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.
