Overview
Matthew A. Caplan is a litigation attorney in Holland & Knight's Philadelphia and Nashville offices. He focuses his practice on employment litigation, including claims arising under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA), the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and the Defend Trade Secrets Act (DTSA). His experience also includes aiding internal investigations and assisting clients with drafting policies to avoid the prospect of litigation. Mr. Caplan also regularly advises and represents clients on compliance, investigation and dispute resolution regarding Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) workplace safety and whistleblower matters.
Prior to joining Holland & Knight, Mr. Caplan gained valuable experience as a federal judicial law clerk for the Honorable Waverly D. Crenshaw, Jr., Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Tennessee. He also served as a judicial intern for the Honorable Thomas M. Hardiman of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Additionally, Mr. Caplan worked as a litigation associate with another international law firm.
While in law school, Mr. Caplan was a member of the Georgetown Law Appellate Litigation Clinic, where he helped draft and file petitions for certiorari to the U.S. Supreme Court, as well as briefs to federal appellate courts and the Board of Immigration Appeals within the U.S. Department of Justice.
Before law school, Mr. Caplan worked as a federal government consultant with a global consulting firm in Washington, D.C., where he advised various clients, including the Military Health System within the U.S. Department of Defense. He also served on an official delegation to the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland, to advocate for Middle East policy strategies before heads of state, ambassadors and diplomats of more than 20 countries.
