Jared L. Dodd
Associate
Overview
Jared L. Dodd is a private wealth services lawyer in Holland & Knight's Chicago office, where he advises high-net-worth clients across the United States on estate and wealth preservation planning, business succession and tax planning, trust administration and charitable giving strategies.
Mr. Dodd's clients include entrepreneurs, corporate executives, business owners, financial industry professionals and family offices, as well as athletes, entertainers and philanthropists. He works closely with accounting, investment, business and tax advisers to understand his clients' personal objectives and to identify opportunities to implement sophisticated planning techniques to preserve family wealth for future generations by maximizing available income and transfer tax benefits. In addition, Mr. Dodd advises his clients on the tax implications of their existing personal and business structures and designs tax-advantaged vehicles to achieve tax minimization and deferral opportunities related to state, local and federal income taxes, as well as gift, estate and generation-skipping transfer taxes. Mr. Dodd also regularly implements strategies to address pre-liquidity event planning, mergers and acquisitions (M&A), family investment entities and other mechanisms to accomplish tax-efficient wealth transfers, including dynasty trusts, charitable trusts, private foundations, intrafamily lending arrangements and life insurance planning.
Mr. Dodd seeks to balance client objectives by designing structures to optimize tax benefits while maintaining flexibility, access and control among the client and their family. He is attentive to considerations common to multigenerational family planning and seeks to understand a client's values and legacy in order to incorporate provisions to reinforce and preserve those values and legacy for a client's children and future generations, in a manner often unrelated to tax concerns. He is also acutely aware that asset protection and privacy considerations are an important part of any client's estate plan. Mr. Dodd designs and develops plans to protect clients and their assets from personal, business or spousal creditors, and maximizes client privacy at all available opportunities.
Once these structures are in place, Mr. Dodd serves as a resource to clients and their other advisers to maintain the underlying structures, promote the proper utilization for enhanced wealth planning and make strategic changes as objectives, relevant laws and facts change over time. He also assists clients with philanthropic and charitable giving objectives through the implementation of charitable trusts and the creation and management of private foundations.
Prior to joining Holland & Knight, Mr. Dodd worked as a private wealth services attorney at other international law firms in Chicago, Illinois, and St. Louis, Missouri, where he handled matters involving trusts and estates, income, gift, estate and generation-skipping transfer tax issues, as well as business succession and intrafamily corporate governance matters.
