Overview

Michael Helweil is a real estate finance attorney in Holland & Knight's Boston and New York offices. Mr. Helweil represents lenders, including debt fund platforms and financial institutions of all sizes, in connection with the origination, syndication, purchase and sale of commercial real estate loans.

In his work with debt fund platforms and financial institutions, Mr. Helweil handles construction, mezzanine and permanent financing, as well as intercreditor agreements and documentation associated with repurchase and warehouse credit facilities. He also counsels clients in connection with loan workouts and distressed loans.

In addition, Mr. Helweil represents a broad range of clients, including developers, capital management firms and financial institutions in obtaining financing across all real estate asset types.

Prior to joining Holland & Knight, Mr. Helweil was an attorney at a real estate-focused law firm in its New York office. During law school, he served on the editorial board of the Virginia Journal of Law & Technology.

  • Representation of the agent and a syndicate of lenders in a $64.8 million construction loan facility for the development of a multifamily apartment building in Sleepy Hollow, New York
  • Representation of a debt fund in connection with a $54.6 million bridge loan facility secured by mobile home communities in Ohio
  • Representation of the agent and a syndicate of lenders in a $114.5 million construction loan facility for the development of a multifamily apartment building in Washington, D.C.
  • Representation of the lender in connection with a $90 million bridge loan facility secured by 10 industrial properties across four different states 
  • Representation of the agent and a syndicate of lenders in a $35 million term loan facility secured by the ground leasehold estate of an office property located in Melville, New York
  • Representation of a debt fund in connection with a $30 million first mortgage bridge loan for an office building in Downers Grove, Illinois
  • Representation of the agent in connection with a $95 million syndicated construction and term loan facility for the acquisition and improvement of a 17-building industrial park with approximately 1.2 million square feet located in Rockland County, New York
  • Representation of a debt fund in connection with a $14 million loan to an office building for the refinance of an approximately 330,800-square-foot, 1,100-space structured parking garage located in Allentown, Pennsylvania
  • Representation of the agent and a syndicate of lenders in a $43.5 million construction financing for an apartment building with ground-floor retail and a parking facility in Boston
  • Representation of the agent and a syndicate of lenders in a $91 million financing for a high-rise apartment building and parking structure in Washington, D.C.
  • Representation of a debt fund in connection with a $14.5 million first mortgage bridge loan to finance the acquisition of a 158,380-square-foot retail center in Omaha, Nebraska
  • Representation of a debt fund in its $318 million financing for the construction and recapitalization of a 2-million-square-foot luxury mixed-use development in downtown Boca Raton, Florida
