What the Coast Guard Can Expect Under the Trump Administration

Federal News Network

Maritime attorney Sean Pribyl was invited to join an episode of the Federal News Network's Federal Drive with Tom Temin podcast to discuss the future of the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) under the Trump Administration. He briefly summarized his time as an attorney with the USCG before highlighting the three main functions of the agency — military service, maritime regulations and maritime law enforcement — as well as some of the recurring issues it faces — lack of sufficient funding and problems with shipbuilding. Mr. Pribyl also outlined three areas he's watching this year: the USCG's role in immigration enforcement, including assisting with repatriating migrants; its ability to influence legislation such as the SHIPS Act that seeks to bolster U.S. shipbuilding capacity and the merchant marine industry to enhance the country's national security and commercial capabilities; and the effects of regulatory and rulemaking freezes on investor activity.
