International Trade attorney Francisco Sánchez was quoted in a The American Lawyer article discussing the potential for active trade policies between the U.S. and Mexico under the Trump Administration, considering Trump's proposals to use tariffs to influence Mexico's actions regarding illicit drugs and migrants. He highlighted that Trump's threats to impose tariffs conflict with the current U.S.-Mexico-Canada free trade agreement, yet executive powers could sidestep these restrictions, potentially straining U.S. businesses and consumers. Furthermore, Mr. Sánchez noted upcoming negotiations for the trade agreement's review, anticipating demands for modifications that could impact the automotive industry and address Chinese companies' presence in North America.
"I have to believe that part of that conversation will be making sure that China is not using Mexico as a conduit to circumvent whatever you’re doing to get China to play fairly," he said.
