Expect Stricter Review of Exports
Mexico City Executive Partner Luis Rubio was cited in articles published by Reforma, Mural and El Norte about the agreement between Mexico and the United States to delay implementation of tariffs for a month. Mr. Rubio cautioned that exporters will have to be very careful in detailing the certificates of origen of goods to show they comply with the requirements established by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). Because a large number of products exported by Mexico are exempt from tariffs under USMCA and the rate has increased to 25 percent, he explained companies should expect stricter scrutiny of imports by U.S. authorities.
"Now they are going to be much stricter in verifying the origin of products, because perhaps with a 10 percent tariff the verification was not as strict," he said.
