USA: Update on the U.S. Privacy Law Landscape

Data Strategy, Security & Privacy attorneys Kevin Angle, Bart Huffman and Rachel Marmor co-authored an article published in OneTrust DataGuidance's Data Protection Leader Magazine discussing the significantly altered U.S. privacy landscape and how it will affect privacy professionals. While federal privacy legislation has stalled, state legislatures have been active in advancing both comprehensive and focused privacy laws. Seven states adopted comprehensive privacy laws in 2024, bringing the total to 19 such laws that will be operational across the U.S. by Jan. 1, 2026. Additionally, states have focused on enhancing protections for sensitive data types, including children's data and biometric information.
