China Will Carry Weight When Amending USMCA
International Trade attorney Turenna Ramirez was cited in a Reforma article commenting on the effects of China's increased investment in Mexico on the upcoming amendments to the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USCMA) in 2026. Ms. Ramirez explained that Mexico will have to address concerns related to nearshoring, in particular during negotiations with the U.S.
"The elephant at the negotiating table will be China, in different aspects, but the most important that we have to keep in mind is that this nearshoring, the relocalization presents itself because of a commercial tension between the United States and China, because of the United States and because of factors that have relevant such as rules of origin," she said.
