Why the Clock Is Already Ticking on the New GOP Congressional Majority
Public Policy & Regulation attorney Tom Davis was quoted in a CNN Politics article discussing some of the difficulties Republican lawmakers may face despite controlling Congress and the White House. Mr. Davis commented on the challenge of maintaining party discipline, adding that without the excuse of a divided Congress, parties risk alienating their base by failing to deliver on key priorities. He also noted that increasing political polarization may push legislators to pursue agendas too extreme for swing voters, which could provoke electoral backlash, as voters often aim to restrain perceived overreach by the president and their party.
"Generally, voters in midterms vote to put a check on the president rather than giving him a blank check, because presidents and parties tend to overread their mandates. When you move past the voters too quickly, they will put the brakes on," he said.
