Infrastructure and Land Prices Among the Reasons for High Solar Energy Costs

Energy attorney Claro Manuel Cotes was cited in an article published by La República about the challenges facing solar energy development in Colombia. Despite advances in solar panel efficiency, only 10 percent of the energy consumed in the country comes from solar sources. The high costs associated with the necessary infrastructure and land acquisitions, along with strict regulations, increase the complexities and expenses involved in implementing these projects. Mr. Cotes additionally explained that installing solar systems not only requires compliance with current regulations, including obtaining licenses specific to different locations, but also demands following stringent technical and administrative procedures.

"Submit an application to the corresponding electric grid operator, complying with the established technical and administrative requirements. Resolution CREG 030 of 2018 outlines the procedures for connecting distributed generation systems, such as solar panels, to the national electrical grid," he said.
