How Much Do Rising Gas Bills Impact the End User?
Energy & Natural Resources attorney Inés Elvira Vesga was interviewed by Portafolio about rising gas bills in Colombia. Ms. Vesga explained that the increase has resulted from the need to import gas, which is more expensive to transport within the country. This increase affects both the country's Consumer Price Index and consumers' wallets. She added that companies are adjusting regulated rate variables to reflect actual transportation and gas costs, without introducing any artificial price hikes.
"It has become necessary for the distributors, who are obliged to serve users, to turn to another supply source, which is imported gas. Gas has been imported here for a long time, but primarily for power plants to meet other types of demand, not domestic demand," she said.
