Calls to Preserve USMCA and Investment
Turenna Ramirez, who leads the international trade practice in Holland & Knight's Mexico offices, was interviewed by Reforma about the uncertainty surrounding tariffs imposed by the United States. President Donald Trump has announced some measures while threatening others. Ms. Ramirez commented that it is important to create a scenario that allows for negotiations under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) to attract future foreign investment in the country.
"USMCA is the most important judicial instrument for a foreign investor in the region. I think it should be the Mexican government's number one priority, to keep the treaty," she explained. "In commercial matters, the decisions that the Mexican government makes should be very objective, because they can cause foreign investment in Mexico to implode, and that would disincentivize more companies to keep coming."
