Pension Reform Achieved First Approvals in the House: 37 Articles, with 'Green Light'
Portafolio
Labor and employment attorney Camilo Cuervo was quoted in a Portafolio article about the progress in the approval of the pension reform in Colombia's House of Representatives. Even though 37 out of the 94 articles of the initiative have been given the green light, Mr. Cuervo warned that the government faces a race against time, as there are only five weeks left in the legislative session and much to debate. The opposition has valuable tools, such as proposals and recusals, to delay the times both in the committee debate and in the plenary session of the House. Meanwhile, the Seventh Committee is expected to focus on the most critical points, such as the reform's effective date, contribution threshold and benefits for ethnic communities.
"Despite the fact that in the commission everyone is working on the government's project, to the point that the incorporations and changes that President Petro intended to include were not included precisely to save time and avoid discussions and new proposals. It is clear that especially the opposition has very valuable tools, especially through proposals and recusals, so that both in the committee debate and in the debate of the plenary session of the House, they do not have enough time," he said.
