What Happens If I've Been a Stay-at-Home Spouse Without Pension Contributions? Insights from the Reform's Key Provisions

El Tiempo

Labor and employment attorney Camilo Cuervo was cited in an article by El Tiempo addressing substantial changes in the pension reform in Colombia set to take effect from July 1, 2025. He focused on the reform's implications for stay-at-home spouses who have never paid into a pension scheme. Mr. Cuervo explained the importance for these individuals to evaluate their socio economic circumstances to determine their eligibility for the Solidarity Pillar, a measure designed to support those in financial need. This focus brings attention to an essential element of the reform, offering a safety net to those who, for various reasons, have not contributed to the pension system but are in vulnerable positions.

"From the moment the new pension system takes effect on July 1, 2025, the reform will be fully enacted. This means that a stay-at-home spouse who has never contributed needs to evaluate their socio economic status to determine if they qualify as being in poverty, thereby making them eligible to apply for the Solidarity Pillar," he said.
